Early Entrance to Kindergarten
Overview
District 27 is committed to ensuring all students begin their educational journey in a setting that matches their developmental needs. While most students begin kindergarten after turning 5 years old by September 1, some children with fall birthdays may be considered for early entrance.
Children who turn 5 between September 2 and October 31 and demonstrate exceptional readiness across academic, cognitive, and social-emotional areas will be considered for early entrance. Based on supporting documentation from a current preschool setting, students with a 5th birthday between November 1 and December 31 will also be considered.
Is Your Child Eligible?
To be considered for early entrance, your child must:
- Turn 5 years old between September 2 and October 31 of the school year in question
- Participate in the full early entrance evaluation process
- Show advanced development in academic, social, and emotional readiness
Early entrance is an exception to our standard policy and is only granted if a child meets all required benchmarks.
The Evaluation Process
Step 1: Parent Request & Initial Screening
Parents begin the process by submitting a request for early entrance. You’ll complete two developmental screeners:
- ASQ-3 (Ages and Stages Questionnaire – Cognitive/Physical)
- ASQ:SE-2 (Social-Emotional Screening)
This helps us understand your child’s developmental history and current functioning.
Step 2: Formal Readiness Assessment
Qualified children will be invited for an in-person evaluation, using two standardized tools:
- Bracken School Readiness Assessment – evaluates understanding of basic concepts like colors, letters, numbers, and shapes
- Aimsweb Benchmarking Probes – measures early literacy and numeracy skills
Step 3: Team Review
A multidisciplinary team—including educators, school psychologists, and administrators—will review all screening and assessment data to make a placement recommendation.
Step 4: Notification
Families will be informed of the decision within 3–5 business days of the team’s final review.
Key Considerations
The early entrance process is designed to ensure long-term student success, not simply early academic advancement.
- Not all children evaluated will qualify for early entrance.
- Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis using comprehensive data.

Full-Day or Half-Day Kindergarten
The State of Illinois requires that if a school district offers full day kindergarten, it must allow parents to enroll their child only half time with no penalty of truancy. That being said, District 27’s kindergarten curriculum will be delivered across the full day of instruction. In other words, the morning program will not contain the same curriculum as the afternoon. It is important, therefore, to understand that those students who attend a half-day will miss some of the curriculum.
