Superintendent Search

The Northbrook District 27 Board of Education is pleased to announce it has selected Dr. John Deiter as the district’s next Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Deiter’s contract was unanimously approved at the March 3, 2021 Special Board of Education meeting, and he will officially begin his duties on July 1, 2021. He will succeed Dr. David Kroeze, who is retiring on June 30 after spending nearly three decades leading the district.

Dr. Deiter’s selection is the culmination of a mutl-month national search process that included input from ​District 27 stakeholders​ and produced highly qualified candidates from diverse geographic and professional backgrounds.

“The Board is confident Dr. Deiter is the right person to become our next superintendent of District 27, and we cannot wait to welcome him to the community,” said Board President Helen Melnick. “Dr. Deiter is a very skilled leader with a passion for elementary education and the development of the whole child, academically and social-emotionally. Dr. Deiter brings a bright vision for the future. He is data and research-driven, collaborative, and approachable. He will balance the desires of all stakeholders with the highest integrity. We are very grateful that Dr. Deiter will be joining our district.”

Dr. Deiter brings extensive experience and leadership in education, having most recently served as the Superintendent of DeWitt Public Schools in DeWitt, Michigan for the past 10 years.

“My greatest strength as a leader is my ability to pull people together to achieve a common goal,” Dr. Deiter said. “A collaborative attitude and atmosphere are crucial for a successful organization. I was drawn to District 27 because of its strong sense of community. I am excited and eager to have the opportunity to work closely with the staff, Board of Education, and community to continue a tradition of excellence in Northbrook.”

Prior to serving as the Superintendent of Schools in DeWitt, Dr. Deiter spent 6 years as principal in Belding Area Schools and 2 years as assistant principal in Ionia Public Schools. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Education from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree in Secondary Teaching from Saginaw Valley State University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Michigan State University. Dr. Deiter has 6 years of classroom teaching experience.

Dr. Deiter has served as president of the School Equity Caucus since 2014. He was also president of the Michigan Association of Superintendents & Administrators Region 6 from 2017-2018.
