Parent Message: Inclement Weather Plan and Emergency Notifications
Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you and your families have enjoyed this stretch of remarkably warm weather! Each fall, we forecast our plans for the winter weather season. Below you will find a brief summary of our Inclement Weather Protocols

Plan for Inclement Weather

District 27 has five full emergency days (or snow days) available for use. If an emergency day is used, that day will be made up at the end of the school year. We believe strongly in the value of in-person instruction and know that while a “snow day” results in a day being added to the school year, this in-person day later in the year will be most beneficial for our students. The District will consider remote instruction in outlying circumstances, such as a multi-day stretch of extreme weather.
During periods of inclement weather or emergencies, our first priority is the safety and welfare of our students and staff. At the same time, closing school buildings can be burdensome to families due to childcare and work schedules. We consider canceling school to be an exception, and we place a strong emphasis on keeping our schools open. Families should assume that District 27 schools are open unless they are notified otherwise.

Emergency Notification System

In the event of a school closure or emergency, parents can expect to receive notifications via automated phone calls, emails, and text messages. It is the responsibility of parents to provide accurate contact information to the school. This information is collected during registration but must be updated in the Parent Portal if there are any changes to phone numbers or email addresses during the school year.

Save the Date: Emergency Notification Test

All parents and guardians will be receiving a phone call, text message, and email around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29, as a test of the emergency notification system. Should you not receive this notification, please contact Tarah O’Connell, Director of Communications, at oconnell.t@nb27.org.

Thank you for your partnership!

Sincerely,

John Deiter, Ph.D.
