Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Our Story

As part of its Strategic Plan, District 27 set out in 2022 to develop a district-wide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Plan. Those who have collaborated to inform the work include:

  • A staff committee with 12 members across schools and departments.
  • A parent committee with 18 members including two Board of Education members and four staff members.
  • The District 27 Administrative Council.
  • A student committee that seats approximately 25 current students each year.

Our Vision

Our preK-8 learners will understand and take pride in their own intersecting identities, value the diversity of others, thrive in our interconnected world, advocate for self and others, and ultimately understand their capacity to positively impact their school, communities, and the world at large.

Our Commitment to Equity and Belonging

In District 27, our approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion is rooted in the belief that every student deserves access to a high-quality education in an environment where they feel respected, valued, supported, and a sense of belonging. When students feel welcome and see themselves reflected in the curriculum and instruction, they are more engaged and achieve greater academic success. Research shows that culturally responsive teaching and inclusive school climates support both learning and social-emotional growth (Gay, 2018). Our efforts are centered on creating equitable access to opportunities, fostering belonging, and achieving meaningful participation from all members of our community.

We are committed to ensuring that all students benefit from inclusive, student-centered practices that recognize and respond to the unique identities, strengths, and experiences each learner brings to the classroom, while also recognizing the histories and contributions of various populations, as outlined in the Illinois Instructional Mandates. This work strengthens our schools and enriches learning for all.

Heritage and Awareness Months

Heritage and Awareness Months provide an opportunity to recognize historically marginalized populations, acknowledge the diverse backgrounds of our students, and meet mandates set forth by Illinois School Code, which requires learning about the contributions and achievement of specific groups of people. Each school will recognize the months in a developmentally appropriate manner. Students will continue to have opportunities to learn about other cultures and populations beyond those listed.
