AI Usage Guidelines for Students and Parents

What is AI's Role in the D27 Classroom?

AI’s role in our schools is to support and enrich student learning, not to do the work for students. AI can serve as a powerful thought partner when used appropriately, assisting but not replacing the effort students put into their work. Students are expected to think critically and take ownership of their learning, with or without the use of AI tools. Using AI ethically and responsibly, as well as following District guidelines, is essential to ensure it enriches the learning experience without taking away from the valuable skills students need to develop on their own.

STOP and THINK About AI Usage

If unsure about using AI, check with your teacher first.

Approved AI Tools for Student Use

Students may only use AI tools with teacher approval, in accordance with district guidelines and under the district's acceptable use policy. Teachers will notify students when AI tools may be used and specify which district-approved tools are allowed. AI tools will not be listed in this guideline document, as they are unique to grade levels and will continue to evolve over time.

Data Privacy, Security, and Age Requirements

To protect data privacy when using AI tools, do not enter personally identifiable or confidential information, such as student/family/staff names, addresses, and school details. Once data is entered, it may be used to train AI models and cannot be deleted or controlled.

Just like all tech tools, there are age requirements for the majority of AI tools. Students need to follow these guidelines and not create accounts for which they are not eligible to use. ChatGPT, ClaudeAI, and Microsoft Copilot, which are commonly used generative AI tools, all have age restrictions and are not allowed in District 27.
