Information on Remote Learning Plan
Northbrook Elementary School District 27
State-Required Framework for E-Learning
The e-learning plan set forth is provided to address two potential scenarios involving e-learning: (1) an emergency day, such as a snow day and (2) an extended period of time that necessitates use of e-learning. This plan is provided to comply with the Illinois State Board of Education’s requirements for a documented and approved e-learning plan. District 27’s creation of the plan does not guarantee that e-learning will be used for emergency days.
Background
Using what has been learned from e-learning in the spring of 2020, other school districts employing e-learning, and our commitment to providing the best alternative to face-to-face instruction, District 27 has built a comprehensive plan for e-learning to be deployed under several different scenarios.
Access
Starting in the 2020-21 school year, all students in grades K-5 will be issued a district chromebook that can be used at home as needed in addition to use at school. Students in grades 6-8 have been provided chromebooks for use at home and school during the school year since the 2011-12 school year. All middle school students currently complete work online at home as a regular part of their learning.
A survey in March of 2020 showed that nearly all families had internet access at home. During e-learning in the spring of 2020, District 27 worked with families without access to ensure access was available and will continue to do so if there is a need for extended e-learning.
Teachers
All teachers are issued a laptop for use at school and home to conduct school business. Our primary electronic tools and systems include Canvas (Learning Management System), Infinite Campus, and Google Suite. Additionally, District 27 uses numerous online learning resources on a regular basis.
Instruction
- For short, emergency closures, such as a snow day, we will utilize a mix of online education and written materials/packets depending on the grade level and amount of advanced notice about the closure.
- For extended periods of time where e-learning is deployed, we will use synchronous teaching via video conferencing.
- For situations where we have some students attending from home while others attend in person, we will use a Partial Synchronous Teaching/Learning Hybrid Model. Remote students will participate in the synchronous portion of the class for a duration of time determined by the teacher. Students engaged in e-learning will follow their daily schedule and join their class by video conferencing. Once the remote students are “released” from the synchronous classroom for the particular content area taught, students will engage in assignments provided by the teacher. Throughout the day, the remote students will cycle through this process of following a daily schedule, participating remotely with in-class students, and then completing some work independently.
- For situations where we have extended, 100/% e-learning, students will follow a schedule and participate in synchronous teaching throughout the day.
- Submission of student work and teacher feedback will be included in the planning and execution of e-learning.
- The overall instructional experiences will be designed to be equivalent to a typical school day. For grade levels/content areas where we currently use online instructional resources, these resources will be deployed within our e-learning program.
- Teachers will provide information to students/parents via a daily communication that will include links to the daily lesson resources and/or video conferencing sessions.
Students with Special Needs/Accommodations
Learning activities will take into account the varying needs of our student population. Whenever possible, we will provide multiple levels of texts, audio supported text, and scaffolded instructional materials. Special education staff and certified support staff will work to ensure to the extent possible that the e-learning is accessible and manageable for the students they serve.
For extended e-learning, individual remote learning plans will be developed to document the appropriate special education and related services/ supports that are necessary in light of the learning circumstances and limitations of remote special education service delivery.
Attendance
- Parents of students who are unable to participate in the e-learning can call or submit an absence to their respective schools following District 27’s regular procedures and policies.
- Teachers will take daily attendance and submit the information into our student information system.
Training & Communication
- Staff will continue to learn about the expectations for an e-Learning day through email communication and staff meetings. Professional development will be on-going in the area of technology, e-learning pedagogy, and overall lesson design. During the spring and summer of 2020, substantial professional development has been provided to support e-learning. During the 2020-21 school year, a major PD theme will be e-learning. PD will be provided in the form of on-demand webinars, training sessions, and one-on-one support.
- Students and families will learn about the expectations and student responsibilities for an e-learning day through direct communication from the Superintendent and/or district and school administrators via electronic communication. As appropriate and circumstances dictate, parent webinars will be provided.
Non-Instructional Staff
In the event of an e-learning day, non-instructional staff will follow instructions from the Superintendent of Schools. Non-instructional staff include the following categories of employees: Custodians, administrative assistants, secretaries, office clerks, technology staff, coordinators, and administrators.
Program Evaluation
If sustained e-learning is deployed, the District will solicit feedback from parents, students, and faculty regarding the program. Program evaluation may be accomplished through surveys and/or focus groups, with the goal of having relevant, current information that is used to make immediate adjustments to the e-learning program as possible and warranted.
